สายหนังฟอกฝาด (Vegetable Tanned Leather) คือ การนำหนังวัวมาฟอกด้วยสารที่มีชื่อว่า แทนนิน โดย แทนนินจะสกัดได้จาก เปลือกไม้ เช่น ต้นควีบราโค ต้นยูคาลิปตัส โดยหนังประเภทนี้จะเข้มขึ้นตามการใช้งาน การฟอกหนังคือการเปลี่ยนสภาพหนังสัตว์ดิบไปเป็นหนังสำเร็จซึ่งคงตัว มีความทนทานต่อสภาพอากาศ แล้วจะผ่านกรรมวิธีล้างหนัง ตามด้วยตกแต่ง และเจียรผิว ซึ่งหนังฟอกฝาดจะเป็นหนังแปรรูปทีมีต้นทุนการผลิตที่สูงกว่าหนังอื่นๆทั่วไป
